INDEPENDENT MEDICAL EXAMINATION

WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT MEDICAL EVALUATION?

An independent medical evaluation is an objective, third-party medical assessment performed by a qualified physician. These evaluations are performed when an individual has been injured and requires assessment and determination of the extent of these injuries. This information will then be used to confirm or deny coverage, benefits, or settlements to the individual. This evaluation is usually requested by an employer, lawyer, HR manager, benefit provider, or insurance company.

Who Organizes an IME?

An Independent Medical Examination (IME) company coordinates the process from start to finish starting with the selection of an objective physician within the patient’s geographical region. Once the report is completed, the IME company will then share the report with the requesting body.

Who Conducts an IME?

This is conducted by a highly qualified objective physician without a prior existing patient-doctor relationship. It is important to note that conducting an independent medical examination does not establish a typical doctor-patient relationship.

What Can You Expect from the Examination?

The process will start with your meticulous and accurate completion of the Independent Medical Examination Questionnaire. Following this, a thorough review and objective examination will be performed with the physician, testing your ability to perform physical and mental tasks.

How Do You Prepare for an IME?

Examinations can be quite lengthy so you are recommended to eat prior to your appointment, wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing i.e. t-shirt and shorts, and flat shoes. Please be sure to gather all relevant reports and testing and bring this with you to your appointment.
